Hong Kong Protests

Today, low-level clashes between demonstrators and police took place at the International Financial Centre in Hong Kong . In the protest that preceded the clashes, dozens of pro-democracy activists gathered to demand political reform. Over the past weeks, similar demonstrations and accompanying clashes have occurred multiple times after a lull in protests during the COVID-19 crisis.

Now that the government is seeking to restart the economy by easing restrictions, the protest movement will likely seize the opportunity to rise again. Accelerating this process is the arrest of a number of high-profile pro-democracy activists on April 18. If the government continues to relax social restrictions, more widespread protest activity could be expected in the coming weeks and months.
